Discipline without Punishment- Individual & Organizational Performance
The term discipline comes from a root word meaning to teach. This word often times has a negative connotation to it. In order to help others follow a code of conduct and correct a behavior(s), do you find you as a leader, advisor, etc., or your organization utilizes punishment or a discipline without punishment approach? How often do you hear termination in the first instance of performance issues/have you been sending your weak performers to walk the plank?
One of my all time favorite books was Discipline Without Punishment: The Proven Strategy That Turns Problem Employees into Superior Performers by Dick Grote. After reading it, I could hardly wait to amend and craft a new progressive discipline policy, document tool kit, and include tips in our HR newsletter and roll out learning to increase manager and leaders on the process.
In my opinion, this is a must read book! It is not just for human resources business partners, CEOs, but anyone who influences the development of an organization's disciplinary process. Managers and leaders rather it be a large organization and/or small-business or even a start-up will really benefit from this book’s advice on implementing a non-punitive approach to improving performance.
