It seems I am accustomed to buying or receiving books which take days and weeks to finish. This book on the other hand only took me a few hours to complete it. The imagery from the story telling was rich with deep messages.  Each chapter offered various seeds of success to summarize and provide key take-a-ways for the reader. This book is about a student’s assignment to define success and how one becomes successful.  The book is written from the perspective of the student as he embarks his journey and shares key findings from the interviews from a coach, youth minister and teacher who were very influential in his life. During the various interviews, leadership essentials were discussed and shared throughout. A few which I easily recall were:
  • Teamwork
  • Positive Influence
  • Change
  • Gratitude
  • Accountability
A few of my favorite quotes from the stories from the wise  men during the interviews were:
  • Becoming requires overcoming
  • Forgiveness will change your life and others as well
  • SOS-success or significance/seeds of success
  • Success is not a destination it is a journey
  • As one learns, insights precedes change, but insight itself isn’t change
  • We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand”
I would recommend this book for those seeking clarity around how they define success, as the book really supports the reader to ponder the difference between success and significance.  As an HR professional and coach, it emphasized the criticality about when individuals describe their achievements. Is it more about themselves, or what they have accomplished and achieved for the benefits of others. As you read this blog, are there any quotes which come to your mind about success? Here is one of mine: “The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance – and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.” — Oprah Winfrey Book available at Amazon
